Valid Wii backup files will always end in .wbfs , .iso , .ciso , or .wbf1 .

To prepare your files, you shouldn't just drag and drop them. You need a manager to ensure the file structure is correct: Wii Backup Manager (Windows):

Ensure your USB drive is formatted to FAT32 with a MBR (Master Boot Record) partition style, not GPT. Also, verify that the drive is plugged into the correct USB port on the back of the console.
