Mission Raniganj Updated
Jaswant Singh Gill is no longer with us. The Mahabir Colliery has since closed. But the capsule sits in a museum, and the story lives on—whispered in mining safety lectures, shown in grainy photographs, and now, filmed for the world.
Each trip took 25 to 35 minutes. The capsule was tiny, claustrophobic, and wet. For the trapped miners, stepping into the unknown steel tube required as much courage as Gill had shown descending.
On 19 November 1989, the final miner was pulled out alive. All 65 trapped workers had been rescued. Jaswant Singh Gill became a national hero, earning the nickname "Capsule Gill" and receiving India’s Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak for exceptional bravery. He passed away in 2019, but his legacy remained largely unknown to the general public for decades—until Bollywood decided to bring his story to the big screen. mission raniganj
(starring Akshay Kumar) tells one of the most incredible, yet overlooked, chapters in Indian engineering history. It is not just a movie; it is a masterclass in human endurance against impossible odds.
More than three decades after the actual rescue, the story of Jaswant Singh Gill reached cinema screens. Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue —released on 6 October 2023—is a Hindi-language disaster thriller directed by Tinu Suresh Desai (known for the 2016 crime thriller Rustom ) and produced by Pooja Entertainment. The film was written by Vipul K. Rawal, who based the screenplay on extensive research into the 1989 incident. Jaswant Singh Gill is no longer with us
Gill personally supervised the drilling, refusing to leave the site. As water and mud spewed from the borehole — a sign they had hit the chamber — cheers erupted. But the real test began. Lowering the capsule into the unknown, with no visuals of the men below, was like sending a key into a lock in pitch darkness.
For four days, Gill supervised the operation. He sat in the capsule himself during test runs to ensure it was safe. He calculated the pressure ratios on a chalkboard while the river poured in above. Each trip took 25 to 35 minutes
Mission Raniganj may have started as a rescue operation, but it has evolved into a symbol of hope and courage. The mission has inspired a renewed focus on miner safety and has highlighted the critical role that coal miners play in India's economic growth.
However, other critics were far less impressed. Cinema Express gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, writing that the story "drowns in the age-old Bollywood formula of bland storytelling" and that the film reduces a nuanced real-life hero to a walking, fast-talking cliché. The Daily Guardian awarded 2.5 stars, noting that "Akshay Kumar’s outstanding performance can’t save this middling thriller" . Koimoi was even harsher, calling the film "more of a disaster and less of a thriller" and unfavorably comparing it to Amitabh Bachchan’s 1979 mine-disaster classic Kaala Patthar .
: Plays Gill's supportive wife, Nirdosh Kaur Gill, anchoring the emotional stakes of the film.
