Anticipating such criticism, Armstrong was defensive in his preface. He noted that because of laws preventing non-medical practitioners from claiming cures for specific diseases, all his case histories belonged to patients treated before such laws were enacted. He sarcastically noted that if orthodox medicine failed, the diagnosis must have been "erroneous" in the first place.
