The plot follows 17-year-old Sean Anderson, who receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island that shouldn't exist. He is convinced the signal is from his long-lost grandfather, Alexander. To stop him from going alone, Sean's new stepfather, Hank, a former Navy code-breaker, joins the quest. They venture to the South Pacific, recruiting a helicopter pilot, Gabato, and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter, Kailani, to help them find the island. Once there, they discover a world of astonishing secrets: giant animals, tiny elephants, mountains of gold, and a volcano threatening to sink the island beneath the sea.
